Según el estándar ISO 31-0:1992 (Quantities and units – Part 0: General principles):
- El signo decimal es la coma.
No obstante, en una nota se admite el uso del punto en los documentos en inglés. - Para números grandes, se puede usar un espacio fino fijo para separar las cifras en grupos de tres.
La norma señala específicamente que no debe usarse para esto ni comas ni puntos.

Y ya que estamos hablando de números, échemos un ojo a los prefijos del Sistema Internacional de Unidades (SI) elaborado por el Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM, Oficina Internacional de Pesos y Medidas):

Cabe señalar algunos errores habituales:
- Los símbolos son símbolos, no abreviaturas, por lo que no se añade ningúún punto al final, salvo cuando lo exijan las normas ortográficas convencionales: «10 km», no «10 km.».
- Por la misma razón, no debe añadirse una s al final: «10 MB», no «10 MBs».
- Los símbolos diferencian entre mayúsculas y minúsculas, y la k de kilo es minúscula: «10 kB», no «10 KB» (la K se usa para los grados Kelvin).
- Se debe dejar un espacio entre la cantidad y la unidad: «40 GB», no «40GB».
- El símbolo de byte es «B», y el de bit es «b». La velocidad de una red, sea Ethernet, ADSL o por módem, se suele medir en bits por segundo.
- El símbolo de los segundos es «s», no «seg» ni «sec».
- Todos los múltiplos son potencias de 10, no de 2. Un kB son 1000 bytes, no 1024.
