KBabel is a pretty good tool for translating gettext-based programs, but how about an Open Source CAT comparable to Trados, Wordfast or DéjàVu?
I googled a bit today, and I’m afraid we still lack such a tool. These are the few tools I found:
- OmegaT, a multiplatform app written in Java. It seems to be the most well known project.
- Transolution, written in Python. It supports the XLIFF standard and looks promising.
- Open Language Tools, written in Java. They comprise of a XLIFF Translation Editor and a set of XLIFF file-filters for a number of documentation and software file formats.
- ForeignDesk, a GPLed MS Windows app.
Juan Rafael Fernáe;ndez Garía has written a couple of documents (in Spanish) about this issue: Un paso adelante. Plan de tecnologías lingüísticas libres and La Traducción en el mundo del Software Libre and on in English: On the Translation of Educational Resources.
I for one would like a good KDE application written in C++, build upon the Okapi framework or the XLIFF Tools, and which integrates well within KWord and the other KOffice apps (OpenOffice.org would be nice as well).
