Parece que otro de los obstáculos para que las pequeñas empresas migren a software libre empieza a ser superado. El sistema de gestión de bases de datos (DBMS) MS Access era una de las killer apps que impedían la sustitución de sistemas MS Windows por software libre.
Si bien GNU/Linux y *BSD disfrutan de magníficos motores como PostgreSQL, carecían de aplicaciones gráficas para gestionar las bases de datos. Finalmente, empieza ya a haber alternativas serias:
- Rekall fue la primera en llegar. Inicialmente desarrollada por The Kompany como software privativo, fue liberada bajo la GNU GPL en noviembre de 2003. Sus autores proporcionan todo tipo de soporte desde Total Rekall.
- OpenOffice.org Base forma parte de OpenOffice.org 2, cuya versión final todavía no ha sido publicada, pero las betas son excelentes. Además de permitir acceso a muchos motores de bases de datos (MySQL, etc) también tendrá un motor incorporado (HSQLDB, escrito en Java
). Hay además un controlador experimental para importar ficheros de MS Access. - Kexi es un prometedor SGBD que forma parte de KOffice, la suite ofimáática de KDE, por lo que se integra bien con el generador de informes Kugar, etc. Su formato de fichero nativo es SQLite, y la próxima versión, que se espera para los próximos días, también podrá leer ficheros .mdb de Access.
- Knoda es otra interfaz a bases de datos de KDE, capaz de crear formularios e informes, y que soporta scripts en Python. Al igual que los dos programas anteriores, su última versión incluye un driver para importar datos de Access basado en las MDB Tools.
