En la primavera de 1999 leí, estando en México, Siddharta, de Herman Hesse. Hace unas semanas leí otro libro anterior, también muy conocido: Demian (nada que ver con el Damien de la trilogía cinematográfica La profecía).
Trata de la historia de la juventud de Emil Sinclair, y su desarrollo desde la infancia a la madurez atormentado por su educación en una piadosa familia de perfecta moral. A pesar de que un compañero de escuela extraodinariamente maduro y seguro de sí mismo (Max Demian) le dará cierta guía hacia el dios-demonio Abraxas, el camino será solitario, tortuoso y plagado de inseguridades y obsesiones.
El libro tiene una importante influencia de Nietzsche y un mensaje bastante sencillo: sólo unas pocas personas consiguen sobresalir de la mediocridad de la masa, y la forma de lograrlo es desarrollar las propias inclinaciones, prescindiendo de las convenciones sociales que rodean a uno.
También deja translucir el interés de Hesse por la filosofía oriental, y concretamente por el taoísmo y la dualidad de todas las cosas: el bien y mal son dos caras de la misma moneda, por lo que se complementan y uno no podría existir sin el otro. Así mismo refleja un interés por el psicoanálisis de Carl Jung y la interpretación de los sueños que no recuerdo que apareciera en Siddharta.
Si bien los consejos de ser uno mismo, aunque haya que desafiar a la autoridad, son reconfortantes para los adolescentes que leen este libro, Hesse peca en él de un excesivo individualismo: el nosce te ipsum no tiene porque implicar desdeñar a la sociedad. Pero lo peor de la novela es el misticismo en que está impregnada.
En cualquier caso, el libro está bien escrito (recordemos que Hesse obtuvo el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1946) y es interesante, por lo que no deja de ser recomendable. Hoy como entonces, la mayoría de la gente acepta las ideas que se les inculca sin el menor análisis o crítica personal.
