Sus reglas son incomparablemente más simples que las del ajedrez, pero la cantidad de posibles posiciones es infinitamente mayor, por lo que la intuición juega un importante papel y superordenadores como Deep Blue distan mucho de conseguir dominar el juego. Se juega sobre un tablero (en Japón es una mesa llamada goban) de 19 x 19 (aunque hay versiones reducidas de 13×13 y 9×9) y las piezas son todas iguales, negras para el primer jugador y blancas para el segundo. Se pueden comprar en tiendas de juegos de mesa o por Internet.
Básicamente el juego consiste en rodear las piezas del oponente. Para aprender, se puede usar algún libro, acudir a algún club de la Asociación Española de Go, o bien usar Hikarunix.
Hikarunix es un mini-CD en vivo basado en GNU/Linux que incluye programas para jugar al Go, tanto contra el ordenador como contra otros cibernautas, usando el International Go Server (IGS) y No Name Go Server (NNGS), así como el KGS de Kiseido.
